In 2017 RHAP began working in the Nyandeni sub-district, one of 4 sub-districts in the OR Tambo Health District in the Eastern Cape Province. Staff from Canzibe District Hospital reached out to RHAP to help raise awareness of an anticipated critical shortage of medical officers; RHAP, Canzibe Hospital and local stakeholders jointly advocated to provincial health leadership to address the staff shortage, ultimately resulting in provincial action to avert the crisis.
Based on the engagement and learning of the past year, RHAP designated Nyandeni sub-district as a Rural Learning Site (RLS). The Nyandeni RLS is an opportunity to better understand the health system of a deeply rural and historically under-resourced community, and to test strategies to ensure the delivery of equitable, efficient and quality health services under the National Health Insurance (NHI) plan. The site will be the focus of enhanced assessment, advocacy and research over the next five years, and will inform RHAP policy positions and advocacy campaigns on an NHI fit for rural, deprived communities.
