Rural Health Update no.2

Accessing the Point of Delivery at Primary Health Care level.

Poor rural communities experience several barriers to fully realise their right to access quality health care. The following stand out:

  • Accessing the point of health care delivery
  • The quality and availability of health care at the point of delivery
  • The acceptability of health care services provided.

This second issue of Rural Health Update deals with Accessing the Point of Delivery at Primary Health Care level. The high levels of inequity in South Africa’s two-tier health system, with those in most need of health care experiencing the worst access to care, has led to several policy initiatives aimed at achieving Universal Access. To achieve the goals of Universal Access, it is important to consider the specific barriers and financial hardships rural communities face in accessing health care.
