WEBINAR: Protecting rural healthcare in times of economic crises
27 February 2023
On Wednesday, 01 March 2023, Rural Health Advocacy Project (RHAP) will host a webinar to release the report, Protecting rural healthcare in times of economic crises. As the world emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic, a new global economic crisis, spurred by the war in Ukraine threatens to throw it back into an austerity mode last seen during the 2008 global financial crisis.
The report explores various remedial interventions implemented in countries with similar demographic and economic profiles to ours. It highlights how some governments successfully managed to navigate the difficult journey of cutting expenditure while protecting critical areas of service delivery.
The socio-economic risk profiles of many rural communities make them vulnerable to even small changes in fiscal policy. This report explores different strategies for consideration to ensure that rural health is protected during spending cutbacks in a fiscally responsible manner. In the case of the provision of healthcare, it is not only the responsibility of the Departments of Health to get healthcare to rural areas. This calls for determined participation by authorities that are responsible for road construction, and the building of hospitals and clinics which is the Department of Public Works.
The report presents a blueprint that demonstrates that resilient government systems and structures are key to protecting the most vulnerable in society and how this can be achieved.
The webinar, which will unpack more details on the report, will take place as follows:
